A Message from NASW-DE President

Dear members,

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! I am excited to be stepping into the role as President for the next two years. I hope this will be a chance to grow with the Chapter and develop long lasting relationships.

I am eager to take the opportunity to welcome our new Board Members and Committee Chairs. At the end of July, the Board and Committees met to kick off our new year. We had a fantastic and energizing retreat that focused around refocusing our goals and commitments to you, our members. I am also thrilled to welcome our new Executive Director, Michael Francum, who joins the Delaware Chapter with years of experience with NASW.

We are looking forward to a busy year of events and activities. Sussex County will continue to host its extremely effective and electric Coffee Talks centered around social action needs within Delaware. Our County and Student Representatives are getting warmed up to plan multiple events for membership throughout the state. Also, our Continuing Education Committee is continuing to develop interactive and pertinent trainings, including licensure prep training. These trainings will become even more important as the Chapter continues to drive the effort to gain multi-tier licensure within Delaware.

I encourage all members to remain united with the Chapter through attending our exciting membership events, continuing education trainings, joining a social action movement, or even taking a role on a committee or chair. Please look to our calendar of events or contact a Board Member if you are interested in any of these activities or roles.

Together, we are ushering in a new year where we will get back to our foundations and strengthen the fantastic efforts that were initiated by our previous Executive Directors and Board Members. We are only as strong as our membership.

Sincerely,

Shannon Fisch, LCSW
President

Message from the NASW-DE Executive Director

Greetings NASW DE Members:

I am thrilled to start my new role as the executive director of NASW-DE. I believe social work is one of the most important professions in the country and as members of the largest association for social workers, you are helping to strengthen the fabric of our profession. I join the Delaware Chapter with over 7 years’ experience working with NASW, both at the Chapter and National levels. My hope is that my background with the association will help our chapter leadership and members continue to ensure NASW DE is a Chapter on the Move!

I want to thank our Chapter President Shannon Fisch, our members, the chapter board, and my predecessors, Debra O’Neil and Marlene Saunders for their confidence in me and for their assistance during the transition. I know together we will be able to continue to build on all the great work the Chapter has accomplished over the years! It’s an honor to represent our members and I look forward to getting to know you as we work to organize more for the profession of social work and the clients we serve.

I was fortunate to participate in the Board’s August retreat, and I’m excited to continue working with our leadership to implement the vision for the chapter. We have a wonderful board of directors, who have a lot of wonderful, innovative ideas for our members. As we move forward, make sure to stay tuned for upcoming workshop, professional development events, and activities around multi-tier licensing.  In addition to this newsletter, you can find up-to-date information on our chapter website at www.naswde.org and on our Facebook page located here.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at exec.naswde@socialworkers.org, or 302-288-0931. NASW DE is YOUR professional association, so please let me know how I can assist you in engaging with the chapter.

In solidarity,

Michael Francum, MSW, ACSW
Executive Director

Delaware News & Events...

Important Update Regarding Multi-Tier Licensure

Led by the Chapter Subcommittee on Multi-Tier Licensure, the chapter continues to advocate for multi-tier licensure in Delaware.  Chapter leadership were present at both the August and September Board of Clinical Social Work Examiners meetings to offer feedback and suggestions from community stake-holders on changes to the draft legislation.  The draft legislation continues to be met positively as we prepare for introduction to the Legislative Oversight and Sunset Committee (JLOSC) (formerly Joint Sunset Committee) in January 2018.

Currently, the draft legislation is undergoing final edits before introduction, and will be reviewed by the Board of Clinical Social Work Examiners at the October or November 2017 meetings.  NASW DE will provide regular updates to our membership in the upcoming months.

If you have any questions about multi-tier licensure, please do not hesitate to contact the Chapter offices at 302-288-0931, or by emailing the chapter subcommittee chair, Marlene Saunders, at msaunders145@gmail.com
