NASW-DE has been working to increase the standards and practice of social work in the State of Delaware. As House Bill 311 goes into effect in June 2019, we want to ensure that social workers will be prepared to take and pass the Association of Social Work Boards licensure exams at both the Graduate and Independent Clinical levels.  As such, NASW DE will be hosting on-going licensure preparation courses for our members and the social work community.

***PLEASE NOTE: This training is a two-day comprehensive workshop requiring attendance both days***

Who should take the exam

Previously, only social workers interested in obtaining their LCSW were required to take the licensure exam.

After June 2019, any social worker who provides direct intervention, case management, and any other services related to social work to the DE community (including entry-level, Masters, and Doctoral social workers) will be expected to have a license in Social Work.

Although there will be exceptions for grandfathering for current Delaware social workers, a passing test score on the Association of Social Work Board’s licensure exams will be required if you intend to apply for graduate level licensure in neighboring states or advance to independent licensure.

Why you should take the prep course

Like Continuing Education, Social Work Licensure ensures that Delaware has competent social workers who possess up-to-date knowledge and satisfy standards regulated by the Delaware Board of Social Workers.  As such, there will be a limited number of times an individual can take the licensing exam if they do not have a passing score.  Being prepared in advance of the exam is a key to success.

Multi-tier licensure will increase the standards for social workers in the State of Delaware, as well as strengthen the protection of the public.  As such, all social workers should possess standardized minimum competencies to combat ethical complaints.

As House Bill 311 states:

(a) It is unlawful for an individual who is not licensed under this chapter to do any of the following:

(1) Engage in the practice of social work.

(2) Hold the individual out to the public in this State as being qualified to practice social work.

(3) Use in connection with the individual’s name or otherwise assume or use any title or description conveying or tending to convey the impression that the individual is qualified to practice social work.
