July 2018 Print

Message from the NASW-DE Executive Director

Greetings NASW DE Members:

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer!  Summer is a great time to regroup, recalibrate, and focus on goals for the remainder of the year.  At NASW, July marks a time of transition – the beginning of a new fiscal and program year, welcoming our new board of directors, and planning for the year ahead.  With all the excitement for the year ahead, I would like to take a moment and thank our outgoing board of directors.  Without the leadership of our board of directors, NASW DE wouldn’t be able to plan and execute our programmatic priorities.  Thank you to Bianca Ranger, Jennifer Daniels, Yvonne Dodd, Jannia Santiago, and Michelle Adams for your work on behalf of the Chapter.

Looking forward – the chapter board of directors will be coming together this July to set the goals for the year ahead.  We still have a vacancy for our New Castle County Representative if any members are interested in this role.  It is also a great time for our members to jump onboard by joining one of our chapter committees.  In particular, the chapter is looking for volunteers to lead our committee on social action, social justice, and candidate elections.  If you have ideas and energy about how to mobilize Delaware social workers or are interested in developing your macro social work skills, WE NEED YOU!  If interested, please contact exec.naswde@socialworkers.org

You’ll also be seeing some updates and changes as we strive to better meet the needs of our members.  One update of note is regarding our newsletter.  We’ve heard feedback that the monthly newsletters haven’t been an ideal way to communicate with our membership.  As such, we will be changing to a quarterly newsletter to the membership, with more frequent email and social media communications.  If you aren’t already following us on Facebook, take a moment to do so at:

As always, please do not hesitate to contact myself or our chapter president Shannon Fisch if we can be of assistance.

NASW DE Attends Governor Signing of HB 311

NASW DE executive director Michael Francum, president Shannon Fisch, and Multi-Tier Licensure Sub-committee Chair Marlene Saunders joined with represenatives from Delaware State University and the Board of Clinical Social Workers partipated in the Governor's signing of HB 311 on June 11th.  This momentous occasion was the culmination of many years of work from the social work community to bring Delaware's licensing laws in line with most other states. NASW DE will continue our work with the Delware Board of Clinical Social Work as they develop the regulations around this new law, and we look forward to sharing updates with our membership.

NASW Participates in Candidate Forum

On June 7th, NASW DE partnered with NAACP Greater Newark Branch, Delware Concerned Residents for Environmental Justice, and the Coalition for Black Trade Unionists-DE Chapter to host a Candidate Forum in Wilminton.  Our very own Marlene Saunders moderated a discussion of candidates for State Senate as well as the office of Attorney General.  We also heard from Senate Candidate Kerri Evelyn Harris. As we prepare for the 2018 elections, we encourage our members to become engaged with the election process.  NASW DE Political Action for Candidate Election (PACE) will be monitoring the races as we determine which races and candidates to endorse.

DE Board of Clinical Social Workers Updates

Following the signing of HB 311 by Governor Carney, The Delaware Board of Clinical Social Workers has been working to update the regulations around professional social work at their monthly sub-committee meetings which follow directly after the monthly board meeting.  NASW DE executive director, Michael Francum, has been participating in these subcommittee meetings to represent the interest of our membership.  However, you are invited to attend these monthly meetings to offer your input and participate in the decision-making process.  The next scheduled meeting is on Monday, September 17th, 2018.  The board meeting will take place from 9:00am to 9:30am, followed by the meeting of the subcommittee.  Unable to attend?  You can also submit your feedback directly to the board at customerservice.dpr@state.de.us

Once the board has reviewed and drafted the new regulations, there will be an opportunity for the public to comment on the completed document.
